Syllabus
This training offers a high-level overview of the quantum threat for cybersecurity, focusing on its technical and industrial implications as well as the responses from the academic community and international public agencies. Participants will explore how the quantum threat is being assessed, what challenges it poses for today’s systems, and how global actors — including France — are positioning themselves in response. The course aims to provide clear insight into a complex topic, enabling professionals to better engage with quantum computing and post-quantum cryptography experts.
We will begin the session by presenting Shor’s algorithm, using concrete examples. This algorithm is at the heart of the quantum threat, and the goal is to grasp its groundbreaking nature and the significant computational speed-up it enables. Next, we explore the current state of research in quantum technologies: what is the difference between quantum key distribution, “quantum supremacy,” and universal quantum computers? The idea is to take a factual and balanced look at quantum computing research, contrasting various perspectives while avoiding the trap of hype and sensational claims. We then assess the actual threat to today’s systems and the possible actions to take: which systems are vulnerable to quantum attacks? What is post-quantum cryptography? We’ll present the latest developments in international research and summarize the official guidance from governmental bodies. This training includes a non-technical, interactive quiz to help reinforce the key takeaways. After this training, a participant should be able to:
- understand and put into perspective the quantum threat;
- get a high level view of the state of the art in post-quantum cryptography;
- learn how to engage with experts in quantum computing and post-quantum cryptography;
- gain insight into international recommendations and France’s official position on the topic.
