Syllabus
The course offers an up-to-date overview of modern cryptology. The modern cryptography will be smoothly introduced in order to get a general view of the existing protocols and active research aeras. It is a vaste topic and rather than overwhelming the participants with an exhaustive list of cryptographic algorithms, we have carefully selected the most widely used cryptographic schemes. We propose to “open the boxes” — breaking down the underlying mechanisms in a clear and accessible way. Through hands-on activities, we will highlight both their security properties and their potential vulnerabilities. More precisely, the following concepts will be detailed.
- Foundations of cryptography, core principles & essential vocabulary.
- Identifying cryptography in Real-World Systems, common protocols and where cryptography is used in case studies.
- Asymmetric cryptography with the so-called RSA (Rivest Shamir and Adelman) algorithm and Diffie-Hellman key exchange.
- Symmetric cryptography with the widespread AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and the modes of operation.
- Digital signatures, core principles and the example of RSA signatures and DSA (Digital Signature Algorithm).
- Hash functions with SHA-3 and the desired properties.
- Physical attacks and algorithmic countermeasures.
- Blockchain and new cryptographic challenges.
- The quantum threat and post-quantum cryptography.
Through a variety of engaging materials participants will gain the tools to understand key cryptographic concepts, from standard use cases to some innovative scenarios. The content is grounded in official ANSSI guidelines and state-of-the-art academic research.
